The old guard continues to dominate the NASCAR 2018 season as Kyle Busch won the pole in Friday’s qualifying for the Food City 500 in Bristol, Tenn.

The race is Sunday at 2 p.m. on FOX. There are two practice sessions today on FS1. Live streaming is available on FOX Sports Go. Live scoring and updates are available at NASCAR’s Race Center.

Also Saturday, Xfinity drivers will qualify at 9:30 a.m., then race in the afternoon at 1 p.m., both on FS1. So far, the best young cup driver has been Kyle Larson, 25, who sits 10th in the series standings with two top-five finishes and three top 10s, but no victories.

Larson is 114 points behind No. 1 Kyle Busch and 20 points behind No. 9 Denny Hamlin. To understand just how much separates the old guard from the new, each of the top nine drivers in the standings have led at least 38 laps over the first seven races of the season. While Larson sits 10th, he has yet to lead a lap. Austin Dillon, the next young gun sitting 13th, has only led one lap.

usch felt the new right-side tire supplied by Goodyear might have a lot to do with the unfamiliar feel. The tread compound is the same, but the construction differs from that of last year’s tire.

“Definitely there’s a difference with the new right-side tire,” Busch said. “That might be the feeling that I’m feeling today that’s just different. Like I mentioned earlier, that it could be the substance (traction compound) that feels different, but it might be the right-side tire that’s different.
